The western part of the delta of the Kelantan River, northwest of the town of Kota Baru, is a classic arrangement of alternate ridges (locally called permatang) and channels. Sediment from the main mouth of the Kelantan River travelling west by a coastal current, has built a series of beach ridges, separated by deltaic channels rich in sediment. The face of the ridges demonstrate structures of alluvial sedimentation, with coastal vegetation including low trees covering the higher parts. Old dry channels cut across the vegetated sand reaches. The sea is towards the north, in which direction the sand ridges become smaller and the vegetation is low and scattered. The delta is extending towards the north; the channels between the ridges are drying up, and the vegetated ridges are establishing themselves.
