The key-shaped island of Kakaban is in the Sulawesi Sea off the eastern coast of Kalimantan near the Berau Delta. An outer coral rim under a well-developed canopy of mangroves surrounds a lake towards the northwestern half of the island and then stretches southeast in a linear fashion. Numerous steep-sided limestone hills form small islands in the lake, the water of which is not saline like the sea although some subsurface seepage occurs through the rim. The lake has some distinctive aquafauna including stingless jellyfish. Kakaban is becoming a tourist destination due to the presence of the lake with its characteristic aquafauna, the landscape of limestone hills, the good beaches, the potential for diving, and the proximity to the mainland.
