This high-resolution image demonstrates the intensive nature of land use in the Mekong Delta, south of Tra Vinh. Every inch of land is used to grow leafy and other types of vegetables and herbs. The patchwork of fields in different colours shows various stages of farming: bare plots, planting of seeds, small seedlings, crops ready for harvest. Apparently there is a quick rotation of crops. The area is served by a network of canals whose banks are lined with coconut and Nypa palms and banana trees. Coconut and banana border the fields and also grow in small patches in people’s yards. The tenders of the field live in scattered houses, each in its own yard. Besides water management the canals also serve as transportation routes.
