This is the permatang landscape of the coast of Kelantan and Trengganu in Malaysia with alternate beach ridges and lagoons. A beach ridge, vegetated with various kinds of palms, occurs at the northern margin of the image. South of it is a coastal lagoon, connected to the Kelantan River. Boats with silver wakes ply on the lagoon or are tied up at small piers. The high ground of the next beach ridge carries a ribbon-shaped settlement with multicoloured roofs and winding roads. Breaks in the beach ridge have become ponds and boat passages. The next lagoon has been developed for plantation agriculture and the stream through it has been canalized. Towards the south, another beach ridge topped with houses and a road flanks this lagoon. Palm trees are everywhere. Some, such as Nypa, are growing naturally in this coastal environment; others, such as coconut or oil palm, have been planted for economic reasons.
