A series of coral reefs trending northeast-southwest occur in the Muna Strait in South Sulawesi, between the islands of Kabaena and Muna. These are atolls but with elongated shapes. The submerged reefs are steep-sided but steps occur at several levels. Well-developed but narrow beaches skirt the southeastern side of the reefs, but a couple of exceptions to this general pattern occur. Vegetation has developed on the higher parts of the islands but only in small patches.
