Siem Reap, the gateway to the temples of Angkor, has expanded rapidly in recent years, adding new hotels, travel organizations, and urban structures to the citiscape. The Siem Reap River flows through the centre of the image. National Highway 6 to Phnom Penh crosses the river over the second bridge from the south. The Royal Gardens are on the west bank of the river, next to the bridge, with the Royal Residence to its south, partly visible through the trees. The old colonial Grand Hotel d’Angkor, located to the north of the Royal Gardens is now joined by many other luxurious hotels with impressive ground plans and leafy quadrangles. The Angkor National Museum lies immediately to the north of the Grand Hotel. Shady streets, low red-roofed shop and guest houses, and small markets still display the charms of old Siem Reap.
