The 2076m high volcano of Tangkuban Perahu sits north of Lembang just beyond Bandung. The usual dormancy and the location of the volcano have resulted in its becoming a prime tourist attraction on Java. It is possible to drive to the edge of the crater as indicated by the number of cars parked at the end of the road. Beyond the car parks are several souvenir stalls and then the dark pyroclastic material of old eruptions, followed by the bright fresh volcanic material at the centre of the crater. The outer slopes are under forest, which is establishing itself towards the crater.
