A number of small coral islands like these (collectively known as Pulau Seribu or ‘thousand islands’) occur off the coast of Jakarta. These examples show a variety of reefs including two atoll-shaped structures, one of which has unusual channels, probably anthropogenic, across the reef. These islands are in heavy use, including tourism, as is illustrated by the density of settlements and the number of jetties. Where undisturbed, the exposed parts of the reef are under dense low vegetation, surrounded by sandy beaches and spits. The underwater coral reefs cover a much greater area, hosting a wide variety of aquatic life.
