Tanjung Puting Reserve is designated as a biosphere reserve in 1997 and declared a National Park in 1982. It covers a total area of 415,040 hectares and is very rich in wildlife species. Tanjung Puting contains a large diversity of forest ecosystems which include lowland forest, freshwater swamp forest, tropical heat forest, peat swamp forest, mangrove forest and coastal forest. There are also a few rehabitation centres for orangutans in the reserve.
